- 1920-1924 – a period of deep inside unrest for the orthodox priest Teodor Popescu, who served at that time at the church “Cuibul cu Barza” in Bucharest.

Dumitru Cornilescu, a young student in theology, was working at that time at the translation of the Bible in the modern Romanian language. While passing through the biblical text of the epistle to the Romans, he came to the conviction that he had to make a decision for God : “There is no one righteous, not even one…”. So, God , through His power, gave a clear understanding on the salvation of the human soul and thus, Dumitru Cornilescu made the decision to accept , by faith, The Lord Jesus as Lord and Master of his own life.
The relationship between Dumitru Cornilescu and his friend Teodor Popescu , blessed by the power of God, led to the deep and clear understanding of the salvation.

While preaching in the orthodox church, the priest Teodor Popescu received too a full understanding of the salvation. Thus, he started to preach the good news of the salvation by faith in The Lord Jesus Christ both inside the church and everywhere else.

- 1924 - The priest Teodor Popescu was unfrocked and excommunicated from the Orthodox Church because he had eliminated from the ritual officiated in the church everything that was not in accordance with the Bible.

- 1926 - With the support of several believers, who had in the meantime adhered to this new revival movement, a Christian church (assembly), having 1000 seats, was built in Bucharest, 48, Carol Davilla Street.

- 1927 - At the request of the authorities for an identification name, the new Christian movement took the name "Christians according to the Scripture". Short time thereafter, other similar churches (assemblies) were opened in Ploiesti, Câmpulung, Rucar, Buzau, Târgoviste, Pitesti, Bârlad, Brasov.

- 1939 – The association “Christians according to the Scripture”, compelled by the authorities of that time, was obliged to merge in a common body with the association “Christians according to the Gospel”. Thus, in spite of the differences in doctrine and in practice, between the two Christian groups, they formed together the “Christian Cult according to the Gospel”.

- 1962 – The differences between the two groups went deeper and in 1962, due to the tensions appeared, about 60 percent of the churches (assemblies) were closed.

- 1990 – After the December 1989 Revolution, the liberty of expression was granted to the cults. The General Assembly of the Christian churches according to the Scripture decided to separate from the Christian Cult according to the Gospel and to function as an independent cult, under the name of “Romanian Evangelical Church”.
“Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”
